National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus, Minsk

One of еру bright sights of Minsk is the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus. It’s  located on Lenin Street, 20. There’s a collection of Belarusian and foreign art largest in the country.  Now more than thirty thousand various works are in exposition, branches and museum repositories.

The museum history started in 1939 when the State Art gallery was created in Minsk.  It was the time of active formation of art collections.  Funds of graphic, painting and craft works of cult art were collected. Works of historical museums of Gomel, Minsk, Vitebsk, Mogilev, a part of Nesvizhsky Palace collection of Radzivill were laid down in a basis of its huge collection. Some works were presented by the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum, the Museum of the Fine Arts of A.S. Pushkin, the State Hermitage.

To the greatest regret, the destiny of this collection developed tragically. At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War it wasn’t evacuated and disappeared irrevocably.

After the end of the war it was necessary to create a collection anew. It was created thanks to enthusiasm of employees. Up to 1946 there had been already 317 works in funds.

Soon it was considered to build the special designed construction for Gallery. A strict, monumental, with a massive facade decorated by sculptural reliefs and allegories building was constructed as a result.

In the history of the Soviet architecture it became one of the first structures intended specially for a museum.

In 1957 the State Art Gallery received a new name - the State Art Museum of BSSR.

The director of the museum E.V. Aladova could get a set of works of the Russian art from private collections of ballerina Ekaterina Geltser, singer Lydia Ruslanova, actor Ivan Moskvin, and other known collectors of Moscow and Leningrad.

Since 1993 the museum has been called as the National Art Museum of the Republic of Belarus.

In 1999 the museum was transferred to the neighboring 5-storey building, which allowed partly solve the problem of shortage of its exhibition spaces.
