The National Park "Pripyat" is situated in the picturesque valley of the river Pripyat. Its administrative center is located in the ancient city of Belarus - Turov.
The National Park was established on the basis of the reserve in 1996. The reserve, having worked since 1969, was engaged in preservation of a unique landscape of the Belarusian Polesye in its natural state, as well as studying the processes occurring in nature related to the drainage of Polesie lowlands. The passing glacier left behind in Polesie a lot of melted glacier water, which later was named "Polesye Sea."
Ancient Greek historian Gerodot in his works mentioned impassable Polesye bogs therefore these places on medieval maps were designated as the Gerodotovo Sea. Parts of this "sea" in the form of peat bogs have preserved to this day.
Inundated landscape of the National Park is a huge value for our nature. Wide open meadows are replaced here by islands of bushes, woodland areas are combined with boggy lowlands and numerous oxbow lakes, on the shores of which lie the sand dunes. In the territory of the park there’re more than 300 floodplain lakes, large and small. In the period of a high water up to 70% of the territory of the National Park can become covered with water.
In the park there’re 943 species of plants, 38 species are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Belarus. Also you can meet here 184 species of lichens, 196 species of moss and 321 species of algae.
